Application
General Engineering
The broad base of engineering work — machined parts, fabricated assemblies and everything in between.
The requirement
What this application actually demands
Most engineering components are not exotic. They are brackets, spacers, pins, bushes, levers, welded frames and machined blocks, and what they need from the steel is that it be predictable, available and dimensionally correct.
This is where the value of bright bar over hot rolled shows most plainly. A hot rolled bar is scaled, out-of-round and untrue. Every part made from it needs a roughing cut just to reach clean, true metal — machine time and material both thrown away.
A cold drawn bar arrives bright, straight and within tolerance. Many features can be used as-drawn with no machining at all, and where machining is required the stock allowance drops sharply.
For welded work, weldability is the deciding property, and the low carbon grades are the right answer. Where the part carries load, EN8 gives a large step up in strength while staying easy to source and easy to machine.
Grade selection
Recommended grades, and why
MS
First choiceMild Steel Bright Bar
Machinability 65 · Weld Excellent
The economical general purpose choice. Welds without preheat, forms cold, machines predictably.
SAE 1018
SAE 1018 Bright Bar
Machinability 70 · Weld Excellent
When consistency matters — controlled chemistry gives repeatable forming and carburising behaviour.
EN8
EN8 Bright Bar
Machinability 60 · Weld Fair
When the part carries real load. Medium carbon strength, and hardenable if the duty increases.
EN1A
EN1A Free Cutting Bright Bar
Machinability 95 · Weld Not recommended
When the part is turning-intensive — the fastest general purpose grade to machine.

Fasteners
High-volume turned and cold formed fasteners, where cycle time decides the cost per piece.
Gears & Transmission
Carburised gears and pinions, where case depth consistency and traceability decide whether the batch is accepted.
Shafts & Axles
Torque carrying and fatigue loaded components, where through-section strength and straightness matter.
Auto Components
Tier-1 and Tier-2 automotive parts, where documentation is part of the product.
Hydraulic & Pneumatic
Sealing surfaces and pressure-carrying parts, where surface finish and tolerance are the specification.
