Black Bar
Hot rolled bar, supplied where paying for a drawn surface would be waste — and we will tell you when that is the case.
Overview
What you get, and what it saves
Black bar is hot rolled and air cooled. The dark mill scale that gives it its name forms at rolling temperature, the diameter varies along the length and around the circumference, and cooling leaves some curvature.
None of that matters for a large class of work. If the part is going into a welded fabrication, if it will be forged or hot formed, or if it is machined all over with heavy stock removal, then everything cold drawing adds is discarded in the next operation.
We supply black bar for exactly those jobs. The useful test is simple: if your first operation removes the surface you would be paying for, buy black bar. If your first operation uses it, buy bright bar. Getting that decision right is worth more to you than any discount on the wrong product.

Grades
Available in 4 grades
MS
Low Carbon
The general purpose workhorse — weldable, formable, economical.
SAE 1018
Low Carbon
Controlled-chemistry low carbon steel — the carburising and cold forming standard.
EN8
Medium Carbon
The standard medium carbon shafting steel — hardens through the section.
EN8D
Medium Carbon
EN8 held to tighter limits — for parts where batch-to-batch variation costs money.
